During your safari Kenya to Lewa conservancy, you will be in position to learn more about the history of this great wilderness which can be traced back to the Craig and Douglas family which came to the plains of Lewa in 1922 and carried out cattle ranching on these lands. The Craig family valued the wildlife bio diversity that existed here and worked in harmony alongside these animals that also called these plains their home as well. The Lewa area was an area with numerous black rhinos but due to poaching the numbers for these animals had greatly reduced to a bare minimum. The Craig family and Mrs Anna Merz in 1983 decided to establish a fence along the boundaries of western end of Lewa downs hence creating a wildlife sanctuary for the animals that existed here. The new sanctuary was further stocked with more rhinos from various parts of Kenya and after a few years here these rhinos formed relations and started breeding hence growing their population in the reserve. 10 years later, the rhino population grew and it necessitated the proprietors to expand the sanctuary hence they extended the boundaries to cover the southern Ngare Ndare forest. Although the boundaries were enclosed with a fence, migratory routes were left in some parts to allow free migration of animals between the Lewa and the neighbouring conservation areas. As of today, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy holds about 13% of all the rhinos in Kenya totalling to about 138 of both black and white rhinos. The Craig family handed over the management of the reserve to a nonprofit organization that runs its activities up to today.
The birthplace of a royal fairy tale romance
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy holds sentimental values to the British and all well-wishers of the British royal family as it was right on these plains that Prince William 2nd in line to the throne proposed to the then his girlfriend Kate Middleton on the 19th October 2010.
