Hell`s Gate National Park Kenya Wildlife Safaris Tour Excursions, Cycling Safaris in Hell’s Gate Park, Hell’s gate Park Kenya lies in Nakuru County, North west of Nairobi in Kenya between Lake Naivasha, Longonot and Suswa Volcanoes. The Park is approximately 14 kilometers after the turn off from the old Nairobi-Naivasha highway, 90 kilometers away from Nairobi. The Hell`s Gate National Park is relatively smaller covering an area of 68.25km² and 1,900 meters above sea level. The Park is covered by ashes from the Mount Longonot eruption that happened 100 years ago.

The Hell`s Gate National Park was established in 1984 and it is named after a narrow slippery sandstone gorge which was sculpted by water and light, once a tributary of a prehistoric lake that fed early humans in the Rift Valley. It was named the “Hell`s Gate” by explorers Fisher and Thomson in 1883.

Within the park there’s an Olkaria I Geothermal Station established in 1981 which generates geothermal power underneath hell`s Gate from the hot springs and geysers. Later in 2000, other geothermal stations i.e. Olkaria II and Olkaria III were added.  The Hell`s Gate Gorge which is lined with the red cliffs contain two volcanic plugs; Fischer`s Tower and Central Tower. Next to the Central Tower is a smaller gorge which extends to the South with a path that slopes into the hot springs that have hot water which can cause burns and sulfuric water.

The park is famous for its geothermal station, Lower Gorge and spectacular sceneries like cliffs, volcanoes gorges, and geothermal steam. It is also a good place to meet giraffes, zebras and warthogs face to face while walking or biking through the park.

By Road: This Park is accessible via tarmac road from Nairobi (90kms) via Naivasha Town on the Lake road South at a junction 5km south of Naivasha. You can hire a special vehicle while in Naivasha town or Nairobi up to the gate. Thereafter you can choose to keep in touch with the driver to pick you back from the park when your trip in done. On the Park`s Gate there are bicycles for hire to use inside the park.

By Air: There is Naivasha airstrip and while you’re here, you can use a vehicle to easily reach the Park. Numerous domestic airlines fly to Naivasha airport like Safarilink and many others. You can also hire a Qatar flight to access the area.

Leopards, lions and cheetahs are around the park but can rarely be encountered.

Fischer Tower in Hell’s Gate National park

This tower was formed by semi-molten rock forced to a crack, cooling and hardening as it extruded. The Fischer tower is 25 meters (75 ft.) high located near the main entrance of the park.

Obsidian Caves in Hell’s Gate National park

These Obsidian caves and their distinctive black glass like obsidian rock are located on the Buffalo Circuit. Obsidian rock was a result of rapid cooling of molten volcanic lava coming into contact with water while being poured into a lake or ocean.
