Tsavo East National Park Kenya is a sprawling wildlife Reserve in Kenya that was established in April 1948. It is one of the oldest and Kenya`s largest National Parks, covering an area of 13,747km^2. Tsavo East National Park-Kenya is located 333km south-east of Nairobi, and 173km north-west of Mombasa, near Voi Town in the Taita-Taveta County, the former Coast province of Kenya in a semi-arid desert formally called the Taru Desert-Kenya.

History of Tsavo East National Park Kenya

Research has shown that numbers of Late Stone Age archaeological sites are found close to the Galana River in Tsavo East National Park-Kenya. The 19^th century British and German explores document people currently called the Orma who were the inhabitants of these sites hunted wild animals, fished and kept domesticated animals until 1948, when it was gazetted a National Park.

The Orma with their livestock were driven off and the aboriginal population of the Watha people was forcefully relocated to Voi and Mtito Andei as well as other locations within the nearby Taita Hills. Following Kenyan independence in 1963, hunting was banned in the park and management of Tsavo was turned over to the authority that eventually became the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Beginning in the late 19th/early 20th century, the British were determined to colonize the interior of Kenya and built a railway through Tsavo in 1898, a pair of maneless male lions terrorized the area and reputedly killed 135 railway workers who were Indians and local people building the Kenya-Uganda railway.

These man-eating lions dragged men from their tents, despite the thorn fences (bomas) built to keep them out. The maneless lions evaded traps and ambushes, but they were finally shot dead by Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson, who was the leader of the construction crew and railway was eventually completed through to Kisumu on Lake Victoria.

The guides communicate with each other by radio if they find something unusual, such as a pride of lions, and there may be a sudden convergence of vehicles to the site, but they soon disperse again.
