Amboseli National Park is a 151 square mile park situated on the border between Kenya and Tanzania in Kajiado County, southern Kenya, an easy 3-4hour drive south from Nairobi. Amboseli which means a place of dust in Maa language of the Maasai people, was initially inhabited by hunting gatherers before the arrival of the Bantu-speaking populations of Chagga and Kamba, and later the Maasai cattle keepers who came from the north. Amboseli was first declared a natural reserve in 1968 before being promoted to a national park in 1974 and in 1991 Amboseli National Park Kenya was designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO to protect the uniqueness of its ecosystem.
